Why Los Angeles Is Becoming the Capital of Vertical Entertainment
Not for the reasons most people assume. Speed, cost, the deepest talent pool in the world, and a state tax credit expanded to $750 million are pulling the format to LA.

Los Angeles is becoming one of the most important centers for vertical entertainment, but not for the reasons many people assume.
The format arrived as traditional production left
While traditional television and film production has slowed in recent years, vertical dramas have emerged as a faster, more cost-efficient format that can reach millions of viewers through mobile-first platforms. Productions that once required months of development and multi-million-dollar budgets can now be produced in weeks and released directly to audiences worldwide.
The crews, stages and vendors that traditional production left idle are exactly what a vertical shoot needs for a week at a time.
The talent pool
LA offers something no other vertical hub can fully replicate: access to one of the deepest talent pools in the world. Actors, directors, writers, editors, cinematographers and production crews already live and work here, making it easier for companies to scale quickly. A platform planning hundreds of series a year cannot cast and crew them anywhere else.
The policy environment
The timing is also significant. As California works to strengthen its production ecosystem, more companies are looking at Los Angeles as a long-term home. The state increased its annual film and television tax credit program from 330 million to 750 million dollars in 2025 to attract and retain productions.
Los Angeles officials have gone further, voting to explore support programs aimed specifically at microdramas and vertical productions, recognizing the format as a growing part of the entertainment economy.
The opportunity
For many industry professionals affected by the slowdown in traditional Hollywood production, vertical content has become more than a trend. It has become a new source of work.
The question is not whether vertical entertainment will continue to grow. The question is whether Los Angeles will become the global capital of vertical storytelling. The association’s founding Los Angeles chapter is organized around making the answer yes.
