Netflix Tests the Waters With a 20-Episode Microdrama

Netflix Tests the Waters With a 20-Episode Microdrama

Netflix is testing the waters.

Between Father and Son drops with twenty episodes at seven to ten minutes each, bringing the microdrama format to one of the world’s biggest streaming platforms.

What Netflix is testing

The episode length is the tell. Seven to ten minutes is longer than the two-minute vertical standard and shorter than anything else on Netflix. It is a hedge: short enough to be consumed like a microdrama, long enough to be produced and scheduled like television.

It also keeps the series inside Netflix’s existing player rather than a vertical-first interface. The company is testing whether its audience wants shorter episodes, not whether it wants phones held upright.

Why it matters anyway

Netflix does not need to copy ReelShort to affect the format. Its entry tells talent agencies, financiers and traditional producers that short serialized drama is now a category the largest buyer in the business is willing to pay for. That changes how vertical credits are read in a casting office, and it changes who takes meetings with vertical producers.

Is this the beginning of a bigger shift? The association’s view: Netflix’s test is cautious by design, and its results will not be public. The shift is already visible in who is entering the format: Peacock, Disney+, Fox, and a run of senior traditional executives, all within months of each other.
