Most AI-Generated Vertical Dramas Won't Last. Here Is Why

Most AI-generated vertical dramas will not last.

According to conversations with multiple industry insiders across the major vertical platforms, the format is already seeing a shift back toward live-action productions.

Why

Because viewers are not paying for AI shows at the same rate they pay for human-led stories.

Yes, fully AI-generated content is dramatically cheaper to produce. A synthetic series needs no cast, no crew, no location and no five-day schedule. But cheaper production does not matter if audiences do not convert into paying subscribers, and the conversion data platforms are seeing says they do not.

What viewers pay for

Platforms are learning that viewers connect with real actors, real chemistry, real emotion and real star power. The format’s revenue model depends on a viewer wanting the next episode badly enough to pay for it in the moment. That want is built on a face the viewer has come to care about. A generated face, however polished, has not earned it.

The prediction

The association’s expectation is that within the next few months, platforms that aggressively experimented with AI-generated series will increase their investment in live-action content again. AI will remain a tool, in pre-visualization, in editing, in marketing. Human storytelling will remain the product.

Will audiences ever pay for AI dramas the way they pay for live-action? Based on what the platforms are seeing now, the association’s answer is no, and the industry’s workforce should take that as the good news it is.
